I need to read his article in more detail. Maybe I'll post something on my blog about this concept. But my gut instinct is that his whole assessment is rather shallow, presumptuous, and lacking the kind of gentle correction that would befit a Christian (I know, that knife cuts both ways!).

Yes, it is probably uncharitable to label this group this way, but do you think he may be on to something? Maybe this "bitterness" is not unique to this particular generation of 20-somethings, but do you think there is some common bitterness in many 20-somethings? Perhaps this is just part of growing up and becoming more aware of the world around you, especially in terms of its complexity and ugliness at times?

It seems a bit uncharitable to label a group "the Bitters" don't you think? This seems to presume to understand the motivation of this movement better than they could themselves? It would be like me calling this author and his ilk "the Fearfully Antagonistic" because they have to attack anything that they feel like is threatening their perspective.

I think that this generation, as you know, is more suspicious that something has been kept from them, that they have been taught a reduced/simplistic/one-dimensional version of the truth and they are pushing beyond it. I also think that this generation rejects the conservative/liberal divide, which is why they want to maintain connections in both camps.

From the tone of this quote, it seems like the author would rather that they simply just went away. I really couldn't disagree more with almost every point and assumption that this author makes. Does that make me a "bitter"?

Great insight here, Matt. I am really enjoying your blog. I am amazed at the confidence people place in their intuition and inner heart as if that is the great source of wisdom and understanding. The stock of dogma and revelation may not be very high right now, but is going to be the only source of survival in the coming Great Market Collapse. In the meantime, I am enjoying being able to read my ESV Study Bible wherever I am on my trusty iPhone. :-)

Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxes. (I am very interested and intrigued by it so far. It doesn't quite get into the details of his theology as much as I would like, but as a historical biography it is well organized. The style gets a little loose and sloppy at points, but for the most part it is well written.)
